[Note:] ROCK RUN does not return to
LOADSTAR. On the other hand, it will
load from any drive. At least [that]
is an improvement! DMM
Since the earliest days of the
micro processor, computer games have
been the mainstay of digital
dalliance! And the quintessential
computer game is the Space Chase.
We are talking unadulterated
eye-hand coordination here. Nothing
creeping up on you. No dazzling
graphics to confuse or distract. Just
you, your ship, and a helluva lot of
ROCKS!
This kind of essential gaming on
the computer led developers at Texas
Instruments to add moveable objects
(called "sprites") to their hardware
box of tricks. Commodore engineers
followed suit with sprites (called
"moveable objects"), which are
cleverly conceived and terribly
compact blocks of screen data. A bit
small, true -- but that only leads to
more clever ways to get around the
limitations.
And the VIC II chip also has pixel
by pixel scrolling which allow smooth
movement of the whole screen. Those
ROCKS just keep COMING!
Faster and faster!
Your space ship does not have a
laser, phazer, mazer, dazer, or even a
Popeel Personal Plasma Pellet Plinker.
In short, you can't shoot the ROCKS.
You just have to RUN through the
gauntlet. You can maneuver up or down,
or change your position on the screen
forward or backward. And most
fortunately, you have an energy shield
-- shown on a meter at the bottom of
the screen. Each time you touch a
ROCK, some engery is lost. The game is
over when All is LOST!
I wish I could come up with a
brilliant story line -- say, where you
are carrying a cargo of rare vaccine
that must get to Altair IV by
midnight, and so on and so forth. Or
make that a cargo of Viagra.... But it
really doesn't matter. You have a
ship. Here come the ROCKS! See how far
you can RUN!
